Civil War Enfield Pattern 1856 Single-Shot Percussion Rifle-Musket, NVSN, .577 cal., 33" round barrel marked with several deeply-struck marks at left breech including "(crown)/TP/broad arrow"; block-blade front and sliding-leaf rear sights; flat lockplate is marked "Tower/1862" ahead of hammer and "(crown)" royal cipher to rear; steel fittings include trigger guard with long rear tang, wide buttplate, winged lock screw escutcheons, two clamping bands (front of unique design featuring integral right-side bayonet lug and sling swivel below), nosecap retaining the slotted/grooved ramrod. Fullstock of oil-finished walnut has stamped roundel at right butt: "Tower London 1862" surrounding "(crown)/W (broad arrow) O", raised aprons at either side of lock and step at lower band. Mfg'd 1862 with bright finishes, case hardened lock. Condition is about very good, the lockplate being clean gunmetal gray with sharp markings, balance of the steel cleaned with general light-to-medium oxidation, heavier pitting at barrel breech. Stock is sound with a clear roundel, occasional marks (having been sanded and re-oiled), with 1" hairline cracks at both sides of lock. Rear lock screw escutcheon, top tang screw and guard sling loop are missing, lower ramrod shaft is heavily eroded. Action is strong and crisp, bore is clean showing uniform light oxidation and excellent rifling. Est.: $600-$800. (Antique)
