<B>Civil War Discharge/Promotion Document for a Union Soldier in the 8th Louisiana Infantry Volunteers of African Descent.</B></I> One page, 8" x 10.5", printed document with hand-written additions, December 11, 1863, Vicksburg, Mississippi, with fold creases, slightly toned, separated at the fold creases with old taped repairs on the verso which have bled through to the front, mounted to a backing sheet, else complete and in good condition. This document acts as both discharge and promotion for James L. Welch, formerly a hospital steward in the 8th Louisiana Infantry, now promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in the same regiment of volunteers of African Descent. The 8th served on post duty in Vicksburg and later participated in an expedition up the Yazoo River and capture of Yazoo City. The regiment was later re-designated the 47th U. S.
