May 1, 1861-Dated Printed Booklet Titled, “Consecration of the Flag of the Union,” Colorful American Flag on Cover, Old South Meeting-House on back, Very Fine.
The American Civil War officially began on April 12, 1861 when Confederate forces bombarded the Union controlled Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay. This historic booklet was published only about two weeks after the Civil War began. It has 16 pages, complete and fully intact, measures 5.5” x 9” light typical cover soiling from use, with its title page reading: “Exercises at a Consecration of the Flag of the Union by the Old South Society in Boston, May 1, 1861. Boston: Printed by Alfred Mudge & Son, 34 School Street: 1861.” Includes the transcript Addresses of George Homer, Rev. J.M. Manning & Rev. Dr. Blagden, with many references to American Revolution, plus topics such as the role of Old South, importance of American Flag, Union and Slavery. Very rare publication, the first we have offered.
