<B>Civil War Date Edwin M. Stanton Autograph Letter Signed,</B></I> one page on War Department letterhead, 7.75" x 9.75", Washington, D.C., May 13, 1863, to James R. Doolittle, U.S. Senator from Wisconsin. President Lincoln's Secretary of War writes in part, "<I>…The disappointment arising from the late mishap of the Army of the Potomac is keenly felt throughout the country and you may be sure that I am not insensible to it…One thing is gratifying that there seems to be very little public discouragement, but on the contrary an united sentiment by the people to carry on the war to the last extremity…</B></I>" Bold signature on a crisp, clean sheet. Very Fine condition. <BR>The "<I>late mishap</B></I>" Stanton refers to was no doubt the great Confederate victory at Chancellorsville on May 5, 1863. <I>Ex. Henry E.
