Civil War Confederate Water Canteen c. 1861-65
For your consideration is this large, Civil War water canteen believed to have been used by a Confederate solider circa 1861-1865. During the American Civil War, soldiers used wooden canteens to carry water with them when marching. Union canteens were made from soldered tin halves with a metal stopper and chain, while Confederate canteens were often made of wood, glass or tin. The canteen is made of multiple pieces of wood staves being held together by tin strips held down by bent nails. The top features a large hole to fill the canteen and a brass spout to pour or drink from. Overall the canteen shows good condition despite its age and use over the years. No signs of major damage are noted. The canteen measures 10" L x 5 1/8" W x 11 1/8" H and weighs 4 pounds and 4 ounces.
