a period copy shot of a Navy paddle frigate at anchor in an unknown location. No back mark. The purpose-built vessel, likely the USS Powhatan, is heavily armed with a large caliber pivot gun in the bow along with her imposing broadside battery of 24lb'ers. The Powhatan was commissioned in 1852, gaining notoriety as Commodore Perry's flagship during the visit that opened Japan to US trade in February 1854. Powhatan saw extensive service during the Civil War in the Gulf Squadron, off Charleston, in the West Indies, and especially during the reduction of Ft. Fisher in 1864. The warship spent another two decades showing the flag before being sold and finally scrapped in August 1887.

Condition: Evident imperfections in original print, else VG, with strong clarity.
