Civil War CDV of Fort Fisher Fund-raiser,<p>with no back mark. Period red ink inscription reads, “Wounded at the taking of Fort Fisher” with “Detroit Dec. 27th 1866” along the border. A one-armed naval casualty in full uniform with a boy similarly dressed appeal to the public for relief in exchange for this CDV. Father and son flank a miniature four wheel painted wagon bedecked with flags that served as a mobile shrine and receptacle for donations. The January 1865 assault on the strategic guardian of Wilmington was mounted by the largest naval bombardment ever witnessed by man, guns from fifty-two warships lasting three days, followed by a marine-like landing that cost the Union nearly 1,200 casualties over two days. Through the early 1870’s it was a common sight to see the wounded scraping out a living as carnival attractions.FALSE
