Civil War Burnside Percussion Carbine
Purchased in quantity for use by the Federal Cavalry 1863-1864, the Burnside was very popular for its accuracy and reliability. This is a 5th Model carbine, with the signature guide screw on the right side of the frame, and corresponding groove in the breechblock. Blade front and two leaf folding rear sights, with the latter numbered 1, 3 and 5 and stamped "R" on the left side. A weak but legible "CAST STEEL" is stamped in front of the rear sight. The top of the frame has the standard two line Burnside patent/model marking with traces of the two line address stamped on the lock plate. A saddle ring bar with ring is mounted on the left side of the frame. Two illegible cartouches are stamped on the left side of the wrist. Visible numbers match.

Good. The carbine has a smooth gray patina with a darker gray on the lock, with some scattered pin point pitting. The left side of the barrel near the breech has some deep vise marks and the top of the chamber has some minor dings. The reoiled wood is good with the exception of a small sliver missing on forearm and some minor dings and scratches overall. Mechanically fine.
