Civil War Burnside Fifth Model Breech Loading Percussion Carbine
Purchased in quantity for use by the Federal Cavalry 1863-1864, the Burnside was very popular with the troops for it's accuracy and reliability. This is a 5th Model carbine, with the signature guide screw on the side of the frame, and corresponding groove in the breechblock. Top of chamber marked "BURNSIDE'S PATENT/ MARCH 25th 1856". Blade front and two leaf folding rear sight, with the latter numbered 1, 3 and 5, stamped "W" behind the rear sight and "CAST-STEEL 1864" between the rear sight and barrel band. There is a "D-C" stamp present on upper left side of receiver (significance unknown). Checkered hammer and sling bar running the full length of the left side, with single letter proofs on multiple components. Smooth straight grip stock, with a single barrel band, a pair of cartouches on the left wrist, sling swivel and a small letter proof on the breechblock.

Condition: Very good plus, with a mixed brown patina on the barrel and scattered spotting. 30% blue remains on the lever components. The frame has faded to a gray patina, with bright original case color on the lock plate. Stock is fine, with pressure dents, a few light chips and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
