Civil War Burnside Fifth Model Breech Loading Percussion Carbine

Purchased in quantity for use by the Federal Cavalry starting in 1863, the Burnside was very popular with the troops for its accuracy and reliability. This is a 5th Model carbine, with the signature guide screw on the side of the frame, and corresponding groove in the breechblock. Top of chamber marked "BURNSIDE PATENT/ MARCH 25th 1856.", with the lock plate marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co/PROVIDENCE-R.I.". Blade front and two leaf folding rear sight, with the latter numbered 1, 3 and 5, stamped "P G" behind the rear sight and "CAST-STEEL 1864" between the rear sight and barrel band. Smooth straight wrist stock, with "O.B.G." on the underside of the forearm, "YKL" and "GC" cartouches on the left side of the wrist ahead of a deeply stamped "M41", with a rear sling swivel and a smooth buttplate.

Very good, with 25% of the original blue finish, showing areas of brown patina and scattered spotting and handling marks overall. Bright case colors are present on the frame, strongest under the saddle ring bar. Stock is also very good, with a number of scattered dings and scuffs overall, extensive dents present on the forearm and a plus sign cut into the right side of the buttstock. Mechanically fine.
