Hicks collection<BR><BR>The Flemish painter Justus Sustermans served as court painter to the Medici Grand Dukes in Florence beginning in 1621 and worked for them for nearly the rest of his career. He was responsible for producing the most complete visual record of the likenesses of the later members Medici family including: Grand Duke Ferdinand II de' Medici and his wife Vittoria della Rovere; Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici; Grand Duchess Maria Magdalena of Austria; Leopoldo di Cosimo II de' Medici; Giancarlo de' Medici; and Claudia de' Medici. He also painted a distinguished portrait of Galileo (Uffizi). His reputation as a skilled portraitist in the Baroque tradition won him commissions at many other European and Italian courts including Vienna, Parma, Piacenza, Milan, Mantua, Ferrara, and Rome.
