Circa 1936 Jesse Burkett Signed Government Postcard. Though this 1946 Hall of Fame inductee began his professional baseball career as a particularly promising pitcher, compiling a thirty-nine and six record for a Worcester, Massachusetts minor league franchise, Burkett is best remembered today for his three seasons posting batting averages north of the magical .400 mark. Though later research would lower his 1899 average to .396, Burkett provides an historically inaccurate recollection to a young autograph collector that misses the year entirely. Joining Burkett's 10/10 black fountain pen autograph and "Good Luck" wishes, he writes "Bats Average: 1895 - 421, 96 - 410, 1902 - 402," the final stat being a full ninety-six points more generous than his recorded mark for that season. We'll forgive the mistake, however, and instead concentrate on the quality and intense scarcity of this amazing GPC. One of many government postcards from the collection of young Howard Lyon presented within this auction. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA for protection and unquestioned authenticity.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
