Circa 1931 Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Cochran
Circa 1931 Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Cochrane Signed Baseball. Presentational sphere from Christy Walsh, the first sports agent (and representative of Ruth and Gehrig), was once the proud possession of Judge Philip J. McCook, best remembered as the man who sentenced mafia kingpin Charles "Lucky" Luciano to thirty to fifty years in prison for his role in a massive prostitution ring in 1935. The Bambino gorgeously inscribes the "Babe Ruth Home Run Special" ball to him, writing, "To Justice Philip J. McCook, from Babe Ruth." Gehrig's uninscribed autograph appears just to the right. Directly above Ruth's autograph is that of Mickey Cochrane, which maintains the same 9/10 boldness of the legendary Yankee signers. Small imperfections to the ball do infrequently intersect with the writing, though to no noteworthy effect. A thin coating of shellac is likely the cause of the tremendous signature quality, though an apparent inscription to the Judge below Cochrane's autograph was not saved and is now barely visible. The ball is mounted to an ink blotter with golden embossed lettering that reads, "Compliments of Christy Walsh, Judge Philip J. McCook." With such high-quality signatures and delightful provenance, we expect interest in this piece will be particularly strong. Please note that catalog imagery shows baseball only, but it does remain mounted to the blotter. Refer to the Heritage website for an image of the entire piece. LOA from PSA/DNA.
