Circa 1929 Babe Ruth Signed Telegram. From the estate of a conductor for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad comes this fascinating piece bearing the mark of a close encounter with the most famous athlete in the world. Intent on giving the Babe the VIP treatment to which he was accustomed, a company executive fired this telegram off to the train's conductor, instructing "Show special attention to Babe Ruth. Occupying Drawing Room A, Car K62, Train 41 from Washington en route to Goldsboro." Rather clumsily, the conductor seems to have presented this missive to Ruth personally, who endorsed the sentiment with a perfect fountain pen signature. Later the conductor pasted newspaper photographs of Ruth at the corners, framing the all-important autograph. The telegram is folded into quarters, with one fold crossing the start of Ruth's surname, but this does not affect display value in any noteworthy fashion. The same can be said of mild edge wear, and a few small tears distant from the Ruth signature, which have been repaired with vintage tape on back. A handwritten note on verso, apparently from the widow of the conductor, explains how the autograph was acquired and estimates the date as 1929. Telegram measures 5.5x8.5". LOA from PSA/DNA.
