Circa 1909-1950 Northern Sioux Ledger Drawing
Featured in this lot is an original ledger drawing from the Northern Sioux, dating circa 1909-1940s. This ledger drawing is from the Robert Dickens Little Blue Hand collection. The ledger drawings are from the same ledger book collection offered and sold from our company back in 2013. The original ledger book would have been traded to the Northern Sioux and was said to be handed down from their ancestors at the Sioux Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and later traded to the collector many years ago back in the 1970-1980s. The set ranging in age from circa 1890 on and is mostly believed to have been drawn during circa 1920-1930s. The artwork is drawn on the beginning of list for Omark & Holan, dated in 1909, and shows a scene of a cowboy firing his pistol at a Native man that has just shot one of his cows with the brand shown on its hip; the Native man is reloading his bow next to his horse while the cowboy is riding toward him. The condition of this framed ledger art is good with very slight wear to the frame, but no obvious signs of damage to the ledger art itself. The measurements of this framed artwork are 13 3/8" x 17 3/8" and the visible artwork measures 9 7/8" x 14 1/8".*
