Circa 1901 Charles Comiskey Cigar Box
Circa 1901 Charles Comiskey Cigar Box. Exceedingly rare artifact likely dates from the year that the Chicago White Sox owner became one of the founding members of the American League, as we guess his age to be in the early forties from the fantastic portrait that appears on the box's lid. Even the most advanced cigar box collections seem to be lacking this specimen, which may be the only surviving one--we've never seen another! The wooden lid is branded "Chas. A. Comiskey, Tampa" beneath the decal bearing Commy's likeness, and another larger decal once sealed the box at left. Thin labels reading "Comiskey" and "Habana Segars" decorate the edges of the 5x8.5x1.5" box. Inside the lid is a simply majestic full decal of the Hall of Fame executive, with the text, "La Flor de Chas. A. Comiskey, The Old Roman." Serious collectors in this genre will certainly want to bid aggressively on this piece, as the opportunity to own another is not likely to surface again soon, if ever. Typical wear, including some loss of the larger Comiskey label on the lid and a thin fissure extending toward the center of the interior label, is evident, but the wood is solid and undamaged and the box displays magnificently.
