Circa 1890 Nez Perce Beaded Bandolier Bag
This is an outstanding beaded circa 1890 bandolier shoulder bag attribute to the Nez Perce Indians of the Plateau in Idaho. The piece is comprised of Indian brain-tanned, old trade clothe, and sinew and trade thread lacing. The bag has a beautifully beaded designs on the front done in typical late 19th Century Plateau / Intermontaine patterns done in all period glass trade seed beads. The beads show colors of chalk white, padre sky blue, greasy yellow, greasy green, Cheyenne pink, black and semi-transparent red. There are several brass buttons attached and the bag has some minor and expected wear from use. Collectors sometimes refer to these as “shoulder bags” as they were never worn around the neck, but rather over the shoulder, with two bandoliers being worn, one on each shoulder. A similar example of Crow or possibly Ute beaded bandolier bag as sold at Skinner 2017 sale for $24,600, a picture is shown for comparison. The bag displays wonderfully and shows good overall condition with little to no bead loss. Provenance: From the ex-Dale Harrison collection. The bag measures 44 inches in length by 19 inches in width.
