Circa 1889 Irv Ray (Boston NL) Cabinet Photograph. The five-foot six inch Boston Beaneaters shortstop was known as "Stubby" for his fire hydrant build, and his abridged strike zone helped to rank him as one of the toughest in the game to strike out. The cabinet from "T. Waldon Smith" studios of Boston shows typical edge wear and minor corner chipping, and a small constellation of spots dot Ray's chest and the area around his head, though all remain clear of his serene face. Ray's name is written in an unknown hand in bold black ink at the lower border, and "Copyrighted" is penned on verso. Size is 4.25x6.25". An evocative glimpse into professional baseball's earliest days.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
