Circa 1861, E.C. Middleton’s chromolithographed portrait of George and Martha Washington on canvas in its original oval wood frame, artwork from a painting by Gilbert Stuart. This finely-rendered portrait became an early icon in the world of chromolithography. The back reads, “Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1861, by E.C. Middleton, In the Clerk’s Office of the District Court for the Southern District of Ohio”. Elijah C. Middleton is regarded as one of the pioneers of chromolithography. These portraits hung in the Old Frontier Relics Museum and were part of the Orville Mickens Estate. Each one measures approx. 22” tall X 19” wide with frame. Decent vintage condition for its age, but definitely not perfect. Please look closely at pics, there are chips, scratches, flaking, fading, etc. Shipping: There will be a $15 handling / packaging fee for shipping this lot.
