carved oak
38 by 29cm., 15 by 11.5in.

A naval oak, rum and tobacco cupboard inscribed with the family crest and motto "valet anchora virtus" of Alan Gardner, 1st Baron Gardner, Lord of Uttoxeter and Admiral of the Grand Fleet off Ireland. Well respected as one of the Royal Navy's most dashing frigate captains and later as a senior admiral. He began his career at the Battle of Quiberon Bay in 1759 during the Seven Years' War, while much of his later service was spent on American and West Indian stations. In 1778 whilst in command of the 'Maidstone' at Grenada he captured a large and heavily armed French ship and he also commanded the 'Sultan' at The Battle of Grenada in 1779 and the 'Duke' at the Battle of the Saintes in 1782, during the American War of Independence. Gardner was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the coast of Ireland in 1800 and of the Channel fleet in 1807.
