Union general in the Civil War (1821–1898). ALS, signed “C. C. Auger,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 7.75 x 10.5, Headquarters Department of the Platte letterhead, March 25, 1870. Letter to Governor Campbell of the Wyoming Territory. In part: “You had better address an official letter on the subject of the Big Horn matter, and I will forward it for instructions. It is quite probable that we will have Indian troubles during the approaching summer, as we have had for every summer, but I do not believe it any more from reading Stanley’s letter. The Indians that he sees or knows of are not the Indians that trouble us.” Letter is accompanied by a small detached docketing panel. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, and a few light brushes to text at end of letter. A letter with superb and ominous content, identifying an issue at Big Horn, where six years later, Custer and his 7th Cavalry would meet their fate.
