There were no Federal branch mints in North Carolina or Georgia until 1838, and the Bechtler minting firm, which began operations in 1830-1, served an important role in the South. The government in D.C. did not disturb the Bechtlers, but allowed the private mint to carry on in full operation until the 1850s.
