The present color offset print depicts two photographs of the art project ‘The Umbrellas’ by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The concept was to set up several thousand umbrellas in an open landscape in Japan and in the USA at the same time. The different places were indicated by color. Accordingly, blue umbrellas were only used in Japan, whereas yellow umbrellas were exclusively spread in the USA. The project had a duration of almost three weeks and was one of the most costly projects by the artists.
The color offset print is signed with felt-tip pen in the center ‘Christo and Jeanne Claude‘. There is a label with work-related information on the verso ‘Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The Umbrellas, Japan-USA, 1984-91, Copyright Christo 1991. Photo: Wolfgang Volz.‘. The sheet shows a number of creases in the corners and minimal color abrasions throughout. Each picture measures 18.4 x 28 cm and the dimensions of the sheet are 37 x 30.5 cm.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude
Christo (Christo Wladimirow Jawaschew) was born in Gabrowo, Bulgaria, in 1935. He was married to Jeanne-Claude (born in Casablanca, 1935). The artist couple created works of art until Jeanne-Claude’s death in 2009. Christo’s art developed from the French Nouveau realism movement and resulted in Assemblage techniques. The couple gained international fame with their ‘veiling projects’ of buildings – notably the Reichstag in Berlin in 1995. (cbo)
