Christie's - London. IMPORTANT RUSSIAN COINS AND MEDALS FROM VARIOUS SOURCES. June 15, 1979. 1-250 lots. 8vo. This auction sale catalog includes numismatic material from Russia as from the collection of Pantaleimon Synadino, a prominent collector in St. Petersburg in the years before the Revolution. He acquired specimens from many of the leading collectors of the day, some of whose names are not well known in the West. Among these are Count Bobrinsky, Baron Nolken and Scrobotov. The collection was added to in the years between the Revolution and the Second World War, notable specimens being purchased at the Soviet Government's auctions held in Germany between 1927 and 1932. Although these references are included in the catalogue, they are taken from the owner's notes and have not been confirmed. Most of the coins from the Count Ivan Tolstoi, Grand Duke Georgii Michailovitch and Count Emeric Hutten Czapski collections were added during these years. Although the collection formerly comprised some 12,000 specimens, the present catalogue represents all that remain, albeit some of the finest and rarest items. There included at least two unique coins and many exceptional rarities of particular note being the 5 - Roubles , 1803 ( said to have been presented by Alexander I to one of the greatest of Russian Numismatists , Count Ivan Tolstoi ) , the 3 - Roubles or 20 - Zloty 1841 of St. Petersburg mint from the collection of Grand Duke Georgii Michailovitch and the Pattern Rouble of 1806 with the obverse die unfinished. This last coin is the second known specimen, the other being in the Hermitage collection in Leningrad. The pattern Imperial of 15 - Russ is one of five known examples. Also present are numerous rare gold and silver pattern pieces and examples of some of the lowest mintage issues of Warsaw, Moscow and St. Petersburg mints. The copper coins include some of the rare 1796 'withdrawn' issues of Catherine II and the extremely rare patterns of 1911 (in nickel) and 1916. Some of these patterns have never before been offered for sale in the West. The second part of the catalogue contains a collection of Russian historical medals in gold, silver and copper. Although in no way as spectacular as the coins, there are many interesting and beautiful specimens. London. original pictorial card covers. 30, (6) pages. 15 b&w plates, 3 color plates. Fine.
