Christie's - Geneva. IMPORTANT RUSSIAN COINS. May 12, 1984. 1-444 lots. 8vo. This auction sale catalog includes numismatic material from Russia. The majority of the gold, platinum and silver coins, together with the coins for the Russian occupation of Poland and Finland, are from the collection of Irina Baronova, the well-known ballerina and teacher-coach. She and her husband collected the coins over a period of 25 years. The majority of these were purchased in London, Paris, Italy, and Switzerland. It is a date collection with no particular stress on the state of conservation. Although not complete, many rarities are represented and several these are of very high quality. Of note are the pre-Petrine gold pieces, the fine series of Ducats of Peter 1, the platinum 6-Roubles of 1838, and the 1895/1896 gold patterns. Also of great interest rarity double-weight novodel 10-Roubles of 1802 from the Hermitage Duplicates sale of 1931, and the Polish 3-Roubles or 20-Zlotych 1841. This last coin appears to be the third known specimen of a coin until recent years believed to be unique. In the interests of clarity, mint names are only given where alternatives exist. References are to Severin's works where possible. His scale of rarities has, however, been modified in the light of commercial experience. The sale also includes a selection of Roman Denarii and a few modern Greek coins, including a group of rare bronze trial-pieces of 1935, struck at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham, England. Geneva. original pictorial card covers. 68, (4) pages. color frontispiece plate. 19 b&w plates of coins. Fine. Lot weight: 0 lbs 9oz. Subject(s): Russian Coinage.
