CR 308/02). Christian Rohlfs was a German printmaker and painter. For most of his career

he worked in a tradition naturalistic style. However

at the age of 50 he was introduced to the work of the Post-Impressionists. He was very impressed by the vibrant color and emotion in Van Goghs paintings. Rohlfs became a founding father of German Expressionism

creating inventive scenes of towns

landscapes

and flowers. Despite his success in the new style

he was declared a degenerate artist by the Nazis in 1937 and died a year later.
