Christian Rohlfs belongs to the most profilic representatives of Expressionism; the auction record for one of his woodcuts is set at around 20,000 euro

This is a hand printing in colors by Christian Rohlfs from 1935. The artist created the print after the woodcut ‘Drinker’ from around 1915. In his late prints after 1919, Rohlfs often used the inverted abrasion of his woodcuts or singular parts of those, like a face, parts of a figure or a group. Christian Rohlfs belongs to the most profilic representatives of Expressionism, who gave his graphic works a unique character in their reworking with colors.



Verso is a sketch of the same motif. The print is verso monogrammed and dated in chalk lower right ‘CR 35’. Enclosed is a validation by Prof. Dr. Paul Vogt. The lower left is slightly rubbed The full sheet image measures 12.8 x 8.2 cm.



Christian Rohlfs (1849-1938)

The German painter Christian Rohlfs studied under Paul Thumann at the Art School Weimar. In 1901, he accepted a teaching position at the Folkwang School in Weimar. After the ‘degenerate art’ exhibition in Munich in 1937, hundreds of his works were confiscated and shortly before his death, Rohlfs was banned from painting and was excluded from the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. His expressive oeuvre shows primarily naturalistic works in the early years at Weimar, and later developed impressionist and finally distinctive expressionist qualities. In his time in Ascona (since 1927) Rohlfs consistently refined his typical technique of the water tempera especially in his flower paintings. (tm)
