His main achievement was a complete oeuvre on almost every scholarly subject of his time, displayed and unfolded according to his demonstrative-deductive, mathematical method, which perhaps represents the peak of Enlightenment rationality in Germany. ALS in Latin, signed “Christofus Wolfus,” two pages both sides, 7.25 x 9.25, August 18, 1743. Wolff writes to noted French scientist René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur, sending thanks for the annual report of the French Academy and announcing Volumes 3 and 4 of his book on natural law. He hopes that the “status turbulentus in confiniis Alsatiae” will not delay his shipment and hopes that peace will come soon for “inter arma enim silent Musae.” He also sends thanks for the latest volume of Reaumur’s History of Insects and comments extensively on the issue of reproduction through binary fission. Because of the indivisibility of the soul, this discovery had produced a metaphysical problem, for which Wolff here advances a solution. Wolff has also added an ink sketch of a tube-like vessel on the second page. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, a few small professional repairs to edges, and scattered light wrinkling, creasing, and foxing.
