April 1992 <p> Christian DELL ( Hanau 1893 - 1974 Wiesbaden)
Dell was an apprentice silversmith at Schleissner Sohne's silver factory in Hanau, Germany, from 1907 to 1912. In 1913, he enrolled at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Weimar, where he trained under Henry van de Velde. After World War 1, he worked for Hestermann and Ernst in Munich, initially as a journeyman, and then as a master silversmith. In 1920, he worked in the silver workshop of Emil Lettre in Berlin, before returning to Hanau to study at the Zeichenakademie. After a brief period spent running his own workshop, Dell became master of the metal workshop at the Bauhaus Weimar from 1922 to 1925, where he worked closely with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. Dell stood out from his Bauhaus colleagues in believing that designers should not wholly reject historicism. He taught at the Frankfurt Art School from 1926 to 1933, directing the metal workshop and designing lighting which was mass-produced by Kaiser and Rondella. In 1933, the Nazi regime removed him from the faculty of the Frankfurt Art School. In 1939, he set up his own jewelry business in Wiesbaden. (Phillips de Pury Luxembourg)
