Christ of St. John on the Cross by Salvador Dali
This evocative artwork was created by Surrealist master Salvador Dali after his painted masterpiece hanging in Scotland's Glasgow Museum. Dali's painting was itself inspired by a drawing done by Saint John of the Cross -- preserved in the Convent of the Incarnation in Avila, Spain -- that depicts a vision of Christ in ecstasy. This drawing profoundly affected Dali, who always considered his painting of Christ being crucified as one of his finest works.

In this sculpture, Christ is the cross, and the wood of the cross does not exist. Christ is standing on a stake like those driven through his hands and feet. The scene depicts an eternal moment of complete surrender.

Dali's artwork is mounted onto a tapered marble base, and stands 15" high by 7" wide. It is signed "Dali" in two locations in the bronze: on Christ's right calf and in the stones in which the spike is standing. It is from a limited edition of 500 castings, with edition numbering stamped into the bronze.
