Width 5 7/8 in.

This enigmatic, highly abstracted anthropomorphic figure is among the larger examples from a group of unprovenanced stone images. With the single exception of an example illustrated by Hernán Crespo Toral and Olaf Holm (Arte Precolombino de Ecuador. Quito: Salvat Editores Ecuatoriana S.A. 1977, p.90) and credited as Chorrera, all the other published examples call the images "Valdivia". Our research suggests that this has no basis in the archaeological literature. Published Valdivia stone images do not resemble this and the like examples in style or technique, and, most importantly, there are radical size discrepancies between the minute Valdivia examples and all pieces resembling the present image. There are several surface cracks, none severe or marring the visual and physical integrity of this striking sculpture.

Provenance Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7477E, 8 December 2003, lot 3024
