1849-Feb. 27, 1849 manuscript receipt from Henry M. Naglee to D.M. Howard, administrator of the estate of William A. Liedsdorff, for sixty dollars, fee and purchase money for four lots in the town of San Jose.

Henry Morris Naglee (1815-1886) was a civil engineer, banker, vintner and a Union General in the American Civil War. He came to California in 1846 during the Mexican War. In 1849 he became the first commanding officer of the 1st California Guards, and entered a career in banking. After studying viticulture in Europe in 1858, he purchased 140 acres just east of downtown San Jose, building an estate and a winery. In 1861 Naglee rejoined the Army, mustered out in 1864 and returned to San Jose.

William Leidesdorff arrived in Yerba Buena in 1841 and built businesses including the first steamships on San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento River, The City Hotel, the first hotel in San Francisco, and an import/export warehouse. In 1844 he obtained a vast land grant for 35,521 acres on the south bank of the American River. He died intestate and unmarried in 1848, and when gold was discovered on his vast land holdings, a lengthy and litigious estate battle ensued. These four San Jose lots were but a small portion of a vast early California fortune. HKA#64262
