This sis a fine Great Lakes Region spontoon bladed war club attributed to the Chippewa Native American Indians of Wisconsin and dating to the 19th Century. The piece is comprised of a hand-carved wooden haft with slight gunstock curve at the top which is adorned with old green, black and red mineral pigment paint and brass trade tacks in a zig-zag pattern. The haft shows a hand forged iron Revolutionary War style spontoon lance blade inset and secured with an old square head nail and poured bullet led. The blade has a typical mid-late 19th Century style and is likely a French piece showing two down and then upward curved basal processes. The piece is from a large collection of Great Lakes region materials and was attributed to the Easter Wisconsin Chippewa Indians of the late-19th Century during the late Indian Wars period and later used as a dance club during the early reservation period. The handle shows a wrapping of old tarnished brass / copper wire with the club having a worn and faded coloring from time and use. Provenance: The piece was purchased by the current collector at the spring Tulsa Gun & Antique Weapon Show in 2009 from dealers and collectors Reggie Roberts and Walter Earl. Pictured in the 2019 book “Rare American Indian Weapons Volume 2”. Overall the piece displays very well and has a nice forged spontoon blade with bright coloring. The club measures overall 35 ½ inches in length with a 6 ½ inch long blade.
