This Chinese stone rubbing on rice paper depicts a Tang Dynasty Heavenly King (Tianwang), one of the four divine guardians in Buddhist tradition. The figure is portrayed in elaborate armor with flowing drapery, holding a weapon and standing over a subdued demon, symbols of divine authority and protection. Executed in strong linear form, the rubbing preserves the sculptural details and rhythmic contours characteristic of Tang temple reliefs. The paper bears graphite inscriptions in Chinese along the lower edge, referencing its subject and origin. Elegantly presented in a linen mat and black frame with gilt border, this piece reflects both artistic and historical reverence for classical Buddhist stone carvings. Artwork can be unframed and rolled for shipment.
