<table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="4"><tr><td><em> Enamel, Bronze and Jade</em></td></tr><tr> <td width="100%"> Snuff bottle with painted enamel decoration on front and back, and high relief lion figures on the sides. Decorated with traditional Chinese motif of long-legged white aquatic birds in enamel within a circle. Has bronze and jade stopper with spoon. Snuff (powdered tobacco) began to be used in China in the 1600's, as a substitute for smoking which was illegal. Snuff however, was perfectly acceptable, fashionable and considered to have medicinal properties. Antique snuff bottles were made our of a wide variety of materials including: porcelain, glass, jade, lacquer, hardstone, ivory, coral, copper, etc. This one appears to be metal. Bottle comes in a white, padded, silk-covered Chinese box.
