Red mahogany colored Official's wax seal box of YuMu,northern elmwood has removable tray plate rest. Comes from the Shanxi Province,China,C.1820. Was used to store the Official's Chops,stone pieces carved with the individual's seals on one end and used in stamping documents in ink or wax. The Chops were stored underneath the removable tray which was used to place the documents on to be sealed. Three interior black drawers and concealed compartment below bottom drawer. Rich dark elmwood interior. Makes a wonderful jewelry box or other box for smaller items as well as a wonderful accent piece. The finish is in wonderful condition and appears as a hand rubbed instead of a bright lacquered finish. Brass decorative latch and side handles and drop pulls,all original. Measures 17H X 17L X 12D.
