In Chinese culture, the donut shape is a bi disc, a flat jade ring with deep historical and symbolic significance, symbolizing heaven and eternity. Flat jade discs with a round central hole "bi" are among the earliest surviving artifacts of China and must be considered among great ancient art forms- masterpieces of the Neolithic period. Nephrite jade from which discs were fashioned is a prime hard and strong stone, arduous to work by hand. The provenance and age of this piece is unknown, but it is a beautiful example made from very high-quality stone. A piece of this size is a large ornamental object, distinct from the small donut-shaped pendants used for jewelry. The circular shape represents the heavens, while the central hole symbolizes the earth. The continuous circle signifies unity, wholeness, and the infinite nature of the universe, its completeness and eternity. Historically, bi discs were used in ceremonies to ward off evil spirits and bring peace and safety offering spiritual protection. They were a common amulet for the afterlife used in ancient burials placed with the deceased to aid their soul in the transition to the next world. In modern times, the bi disc has come to symbolize peace, harmony, and protection from evil spirits. This disc measures 7 inches in diameter with a 2 inch center hole. It is made from very high quality, dark green Chinese jade with natural gold striations indicative of nephrite jade, as gold or brownish inclusions are often a result of natural mineralization over time and a result of alteration or patination from prolonged burial and exposure to minerals like iron oxide in the soil. The substantial size of this piece suggests it was made for someone of high social status. Ancient bi discs were hand-carved using abrasive minerals and water, leaving behind specific grinding or sawing marks. Modern reproductions use power tools, which leave distinctively different marks. This piece has a tiny ridge inside the central hole likely due to manual drilling from both sides which is a sign of ancient fabrication using primitive drilling techniques. The polished surfaces point to a high degree of finish. Ancient artisans polished jade to a lustrous sheen using fine abrasives, an extremely laborious process. A pristine polish is a sign of high quality and significant labor investment. Neolithic or early dynasty bi-discs lack design and were painstakingly polished by hand to create a smooth, flawless finish because craftsmanship was valued above ornate decoration. This bi-disc is a stunning piece of craftsmanship made from the most beautiful Chinese nephrite Jade. Professional authentication is recommended as the value of this piece may increase exponentially if it is a genuine Neolithic artifact. However, due to the near perfect shape and remarkably smooth, polished surfaces, it is likely this is a modern piece and the inside ridge was made by a power tool intentionally. Under high magnification we can see faint scuff marks from polishing the stone that are in irregular patterns. Either way, this is a remarkable, stunning, powerful example of an ancient spiritual symbol.
