Chinese Made Shansei Arsenal Type 17 Broomhandle Mauser Semi-Automatic Pistol, #1623, .45 ACP cal., 5-1/2'' barrel, blue finish, Asian mahogany grips with 14 grooves and border. Believed to have been produced by the Taiyuan Arsenal, with Shansei markings. Although as many as 8500 were believed to have been produced from 1920 on, most were melted down during China's Cultural Revolution, when every extended family or neighborhood had a backyard smelter, and every family was required to turn in ingots made from scrap metal. Families who failed to meet their quota were denied gov't services, medical benefits, jobs, and child care. Other pistols were exported to North Viet Nam during the VietNamese conflict, and some were offered overseas on the commercial market. Complete with modern fitted case, cleaning rod, correct 10-round stripper clip, and a 1929 box of Winchester Staynless .45 ACP ammunition in the red/white/blue box. Condition is excellent as most likely refur!
bished or may be of somewhat later manufacture. Pistol retains approx. 85% thinning grayish blue. Grips show little use. Frontstrap with wear and very faint import markings. Action is crisp, bore is bright. Modern leather case shows light scuffs from storage and handling; maroon interior with minor soiling and light impressions marks. Est.: $3,000-$5,000.
