c1890-1920 - A smaller-than-usual but nonetheless fine example of a coin sword perhaps made by a Chinese worker in one of Nevada’s mining communities. The purpose was to ward off evil spirits and these items were commonly mounted over the bed. This one measures 11.5” and is held together by orange string intricately wound over and through the coins. Fred Holabird recalls seeing similar swords when he worked as a mining geologist in Eureka, Nevada as a young man. These swords are not only as unique mementos of the past but serve to recognize the immigrants of different cultures who helped open up the West.
