Chinese Carved Wood Printing Block Panel 2-Sided
Presented in this lot is a rare antique Chinese Carved Wood Printing Block panel with Chinese script carved in relief on both sides. Circa 19th century to early-20th century, quite possibly during the Qing Dynasty. The Qing Dynasty was the final imperial dynasty in China, lasting from 1644 to 1912. It was an era noted for its initial prosperity and tumultuous final years when China transitioned from dynasty rule to a republic, and for being only the second time that China was not ruled by the Han people. This block is a good example of woodblock print blocks. Historically wood blocks were the only way the Chinese knew to print documents/books or pictures until the late 1800's. Often these woodblocks would be used and then eventually the wood would be planed down and used/carved again for something else. This was because having the right kind of tight grained seasoned Chinese cherry wood was valuable. When these were made a calligrapher would be called to do the writing/design. The wood carvers would then copy that writing/design exactly backwards so it would print correctly. These are a work of art and skill.
This panel is in good overall condition, the characters and most of the panel are black from the ink used. Some scuffing noted to the exterior edges but the characters are clear of marring. Measures 7.75"W x 19"L x .75"D
