Bamboo has been associated with scholars since the time of the
famous Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, the celebrated group
of scholars of the third century AD. It has also been used for
writing on bamboo slips in the Han dynasty (206BC-AD220).
Bamboo painting has connotations of integrity, as the plant is
able to bend in the wind without breaking.

The Eight Immortals - The Eight Immortals were a common
subject for jade, wood carvers, the tradition dating back to Song
Dynasty. Considered to be guardian figures representing virtue
and the quest for eternity, three of the Eight Immortals were
historical figures and five were ourely legendary.
