Chinese Archaic Zhou Dynasty Bronze Food Vessel
This exceptional ancient Chinese bronze ritual vessel is an excellent piece from the Zhou Dynasty. The vessel is cast with a wide mouth and flared rim, featuring a pair of robust loop handles each adorned with stylized animal masks, typical of archaic bronze Chinese forms. Its body displays vertical ribbed sections that alternate with rectangular registers filled with geometric meander patterns, typical of the intricate designs of this period. Notable also are the raised taotie mask motifs incorporated into the decorative band encircling the upper portion of the vessel. The entire piece is covered in a green patina, with areas of reddish-brown earthen encrustation evident inside and out. The footed base is slightly everted, balancing the proportions of the vessel. This vessel is an exceptional example of a bronze from the Zhou Dynasty period bronzes.
