Richly carved piece of furniture with intricate floral decor

This Chinese altar table dates to the Qing Dynasty. The Hongmu body is painted black and adorned with lush carving. The sides are partly openwork. A decoration of shells, scrolls and rocaille in elaborate relief carving adorns the three drawers and the frame. The front of the drawers is decorated with small dragons amidst clouds and foliage. Simple brass pulls adorn the drawers. The table top is designed in typical form with the ends curved upwards. Tables such as this were usually placed in the formal entrance hall of a house, against a wall, to display spiritual objects and incense used in ancestor worship.

The altar table is in fair condition with wear. The table top shows minor scratches, cracks and notches, the front edge shows a long horizontal tension crack. The openwork carving on the left shows a small loss. One front drawer has been glued, the staples of two pulls are broken. The slide rails of the drawers are partly broken. The dimensions are 84 x 176 x 55 cm (height x length x width).
