Bian Zhong was a set of bronze musical instruments. It is the symbol of ancient China's "ritual music system". It was originated from the instrument Nao of the Shang Dynasty (c.1600 B.C.-1046 B.C.) and first appeared in the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 B.C.-771 B.C.).It is a fully melodic instrument including all twelve notes of the chromatic scale. One of the many amazing features of this bell set is the fact that the middle three octaves of bells could produce two different fundamentals depending on where one strikes on the bell; the center or sides. Zenghouyi Bian Zhong (Bronze Bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng) was produced in the early Warring States Period (475 B.C.-221 B.C.). The discovery of Zenghouyi Bian Zhong (Bronze Chimes of Marquis Yi of Zeng) is the most important archaeological finding of ancient musical instruments in the 20th century.
