This framed work, a watercolour on paper laid on board and signed by Childe Hassam (American, 1859-1935), is evocative of his more famous works featuring harbours along the New England coastline. During his burgeoning career and for every spring, Childe Hassam made plans to leave his New York studio and travel to one of the resorts along the New England coast. These trips provided both new subject matter and an escape from the city’s oppressive and humid summers. As a native of Boston and accustomed to its harbours, Hassam was initially attracted to the nearby town of Gloucester, as well as the Isles of Shoals, both of which boasted long-standing artistic communities and were to become famous subjects of his paintings. Therefore, it is likely this particular painting renders beautifully in watercolour the harbourfront of New England. The painting features prominently the bow of a fishing boat moored to the coast. Verso of the outer frame displays dimensions, and inscribed in pencil "206" and "#2104." This piece is framed with the signature of the artist on the lower left corner and measures 13 inches x 18 inches (33.02 cm x 45.72 cm)
