This is an outstanding set of horn and antler knife sheaths from the family collection of Nez Perce American Indian Chief Joseph. The first shows a Rocky Mountain Elk antler tine sheath which has a tag that dates the piece to circa 1805 from the family of Chief Joseph. The second, which is a Rocky Mountain Rams horn knife sheath, also shows a tag which dates the piece to circa 1877 from Chief Joseph. The tags summary is that these are from Pena-Wena-my the mother of Susie White who met Lewis Black in 1805 and that she and the family used these during Chief Joseph’s life. The tags are dated from February 2nd 1927, assumably when the Sarah Alling Family estate acquired the pieces. Provenance: From the private family collection of Sarah Alling of Helena, Montana. The family collection of Sarah Alling, a 5th Generation Montanan, began in the 19th Century and has grown since. Along with being an avid collector herself, Sarah co-founded with Bruce VanLandingham Sundog Fine Art of Bozeman, Montana which was both part museum and gallery. The larger measures 10.5”L x 3”W x 1.5”D. The second is 7.75”L x 2”W x 1”D. Each still show the original Indian tanned hide ties.
