Chief Joseph Print From Edward Curtis Famous Photo
For your consideration is this Chief Joseph print of a photograph by E. Curtis in 1908. Chief Joseph of the Nez Percé is widely considered to be one of the most important tribal leaders of the 19th century. He became close friends with Edward Curtis and this friendship was critical to Curtis’ later success in gaining the trust of numerous other tribes. Joseph’s pride, nobility and tragic experiences that he and his people suffered are all evident on his face. After eluding the U.S. Calvary for nearly two years he was finally subdued and proclaimed the words that became famous: “I will fight no more forever…”. The print is marked on the bottom reading, "Chief Joseph - Nez Perce, From Copyright Photography 1903 by E. S. Curtis, Beaux Arts" and on the top left it reads, "Plate 256". The print is set in a wood frame behind glass and is single matted. The print and frame are in good condition with no signs of obvious damage. The print measures 15" L x 11" W while the entire piece measures 22 1/4" L x 16 3/4" W.
