This is a spike gunstock war club from Umatilla Walla Walla Native American Indian, Chief John Sampson circa 1850. Chief John Sampson is believed to have died circa 1894 and is buried at Fort Walla Walla (he was a scout for the US Cavalry). The piece shows a wood gunstock war club with brass trade tacks accenting both sides and the wood showing various flint scraps which have been smoothed over the years. The piece also shows a braided Indian tanned buckskin handle strap with translucent rose and translucent greasy yellow early very small glass trade seed beads. The piece shows the single iron spike which is pinned into the wood. This was most likely only used on special occasions as it shows an exceptional well preserved museum quality condition. Provenance: Purchased directly from the estate of Peo-Peo-Mox-Mox Walla Walla Chief Carl Sampson (son of John Sampson) and Donald Sampson Umatilla tribe Chairman (son of Carl Smapson). Measures overall 30.25”L x 9”W with a 3 5/8”L spike.
