Lot of two stock certificates from the Chico Gold and Silver Mining Company. One unissued, one issued October 18th, 1867 to H. Leslie for ten shares, signed by president J. Bidwell. He is noted for having led one of the first emigrant parties, known as the Bartleson–Bidwell Party, along the California Trail, and for founding Chico, California. He received Mexican land grants after becoming a Mexican citizen before the Mexican–American War, and became a wealthy rancher. He was a California pioneer who settled at Bidwell, now Chico. Bidwell worked for John Sutter, fought with him in the Mexican War in 1844 and later with Fremont. He was with Sutter right after Marshalls discovery and found gold on the Feather River. Bidwell was in politics, friends of the Indians, and was a source of political and economic stability for the region. The Hardin District had a fair bit of prospecting in the 1860's but it did not continue much longer. Bidwell must have had great hope in Hardin but any ore that may have been present was played out early.
