In 1845, Moses Brunswick opened his own carriage shop and later expanded it making other items like cabinets, tables, and chairs. He later took the opportunity to grow upon his woodwork and began his sporting-goods market. His works were originally designed for the wealthy as elaborate luxury items. Around 1848 he began to enlarge his market, sending his half-brothers to four other locations to establish sales offices and factories. Then in 1873 Brunswick merged with Balke to form J.M. Brunswick & Balk Co. Then in 1884 Collender merged with them, forming Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co. This corporation became the oldest and largest manufacturer of recreation and leisure-time products in the United States.
